Urban planning and development

Keeping people and goods flowing easily through Los Angeles has been a central point of Mayor Villaraigosa's plan for the city. He has led significant investments in infrastructure to drive development of new public transit options and worked to secure housing opportunities for middle class families. Especially in this time of financial turmoil, Mayor Villaraigosa's tireless work to improve LA's infrastructure will help Los Angeles and Angelenos keep working.

  • Mayor Villaraigosa led the passage of the county's largest investment in public transit in a generation, with a $40 billion strategic roadmap to expand subway and light rail service, modernize freeways, and synchronize traffic signals countywide.
  • He banned road construction during rush hour, optimized synchronized traffic signals on the city's busiest streets and deployed gridlock tiger teams.
  • Villaraigosa launched a $5 billion dollar plan to expand housing for middle class families and created the Los Angeles Foreclosure Response Network which provides housing assistance services in communities hardest-hit by the foreclosure crisis.
